Vallavista Owl line of recycled leather and fabric accessories now offers an eco-friendly material cover for the hugely popular Kindle 3.
This cover is rpet with recycled leather trim – current colors are shadow black and British tan, but Owl also offers red, brown, and black recycled leather trim for custom runs.
The Owl Kindle 2 Book Cover offered last year basically sold out. Owl seems to be offering one of the few, maybe only, brandable eco-material Kindle cover currently on the market. I know our office had to turn away orders in the 2010 Holiday season because there simply was not stock left.
The 100% post-industrial leather used in the Owl Kindle 3 Book Cover is made from the leather shavings that would otherwise go to landfills and dumps. This material is then ground and pressed into workable leather which is bound with natural rubber – from the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis. The latex from this tree is tapped from the tree’s bark and collected in small buckets. Trees can produce latex for 25 years.
RPET and Recycled Leather
Other material mentions are the natural organic vegetable tannins used to re-tan the reclaimed leather shavings, and the lead-free dyes and pigments used for coloring. Lastly the Owl Kindle 3 Book Cover uses an environmentally friendly, water-based system of finishing their recycled leather which dramatically reduces Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs to among some of the lowest levels in the industry.
Of course most of the material of the Owl Kindle 3 Book Cover is the 100% recycled PolyCanvas fabric made from discarded and recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) a form of polyester used to make drink bottles and numerous other food or non-food products.
The basic story on recycled PET is that the recycling industry, local governments and waste collection agencies collect post-consumer PET separately from other waste. Recycling plants then clean the PET packaging and crush it into “flakes”. Those flakes are then converted back into the newly formed polyester fiber for production of articles like the Owl Kindle 3 Book Cover.
These Kindle covers make an excellent promotional item for schools and universities, book tours, and client gifts. A cover is one of the few ways a company can brand their name on a Kindle. If that brand needs to also carry an eco-friendly message, then the Owl Kindle 3 Book Cover is likely the best way to go.
