Promo Companies Respond to Recycling Crisis

28 Jan

Visstun is the latest supplier to offer products made with recycled content.
{from ASI Christopher Ruvo}

The United States is experiencing a recycling crisis. The trouble stems, in significant part, from China’s decision in 2018 to restrict imports of certain recyclables, including most used plastics and mixed paper, such as office paper and junk mail.

That was a big problem for the U.S., which had been shipping massive quantities of such recyclables to China. As a result, some communities in the U.S. and other nations, including Canada, “are running out of room to store the mounting stockpiles [of recyclables] and have stopped collecting plastic, paper products or glass,” Bloomberg News reported. “Some places in the U.S., Australia and Canada are sending material to landfills or burning it.”

Such practices present environmental hazards. Still, some private companies are stepping up to mitigate the impact. Last year, for example, Mars, PepsiCo and Unilever vowed to reduce their use of new plastic in favor of used plastic.

Forward-thinking promotional products companies are getting in on the sustainability initiatives, too. The latest example comes from Visstun (asi/49716).

WELCOME TO THE INDUSTRY’S HI-DEFINITION, HIGH-VOLUME CUP & CONTAINER MANUFACTURER

On Friday, the Las Vegas, NV-based supplier announced that all of its paper cups, containers and paper lids contain Sustana’s EnviroLife post-consumer recycled fiber. It had been Visstun’s goal for 2019 to make all the products using 30% recycled fiber. But Visstun exceeded that goal: As of Dec. 17, 2019, the products contained 35% post-consumer recycled content.

This eco-friendly upgrade applies to all paper cup, container, and lid products, including Visstun’s paper hot, cold and microwave cups and containers, as well as its Vx2 double wall cups and P2 paper lids.

“We felt it was too important a step to only go halfway. So, at no additional cost to our customers, we jumped in with both feet, upgrading all our material. The response has been awesome,” said Joe Davis, Visstun’s national sales director. “With this first major step towards more sustainable products behind us, we’re continuing our research and testing of advanced eco-friendly materials. We’re looking for that perfect sustainable cup.”

The U.S.’s recycling challenges were an important factor in motivating Visstun to get greener. “Right now, the United States has a recycling crisis,” said James Lake, Visstun’s cup production manager. “Consumers are recycling paperboard products more than ever, but there’s nowhere for it to go. Visstun decided that providing a use for post-consumer recycled fiber in our cups and containers is an important, socially responsible first step.”

The Nevada firm might be onto something. Leading industry executives have said that sustainability will be a top trend in the promotional products industry in 2020 and beyond. That was backed up by trend-spotting at the ASI Show Orlando. The boots-on-the-ground research revealed that suppliers are placing a strong emphasis on eco-friendlier options. For instance, several apparel companies, including Top 40 supplier SanMar (asi/84863), debuted T-shirts made from recycled materials. The new Re-Tee from SanMar’s District brand is 100% recycled, made from plastic bottles and cotton scraps. “It takes cotton scraps, combines them with recycled polyester, and creates a new yarn and a new T-shirt that doesn’t use water (or) new dyes. It’s one of the most environmentally friendly T-shirts that you can have, and it feels really great, soft and easy to wear,” said Jeremy Lott, SanMar president.

Other industry firms have been weaving a focus on recycling into their business models and products. Founded in 2014, Upcycle Goods (asi/92767) has become a market leader in using recycled materials in its promo products. The company has worked with major brands like Microsoft, Apple, HP, AT&T, GE, Home Depot, Boeing, Dr. Pepper, Google and more.

Meanwhile, Grossman Marketing Group (asi/215205), a $35 million distributorship based in Somerville, MA, last year launched SwagCycle. The new startup initiative focuses on helping businesses manage the lifecycle of their logoed merchandise in a responsible, ethical and affordable way, according to Ben Grossman, the distributorship’s co-president and founder of the firms’ Green Marketing and Sustainability Practice.

To enable organizations to address the sustainability challenges presented by obsolete merch, SwagCycle offers a three-step process: Assess the inventory of unwanted items; confirm brand guidelines to determine if excess items can live on with charitable partners or should be recycled; and match items with an appropriate charity or one of Grossman’s recycling partners.

While such efforts alone won’t solve America’s recycling challenges, the initiatives from Grossman, Visstun and others in promo aim to contribute toward a solution. Visstun intends to keep pursuing the creation of products that are more environmentally friendly.

“There are a lot of important pieces to the eco-friendly ‘green’ puzzle, and using renewable and recycled resources is just the beginning,” the company said in a statement. “Visstun has explored many different options and is working to get to a cup that is compostable or biodegradable and Made-in-the-USA. Stay tuned for future developments.” Learn more about Visstun’s commitment to green here.

Founded in 2007, Visstun launched what it says was the world’s first hi-definition convolute cups. The technology improved traditional cup imprinting methods by first printing high-quality images on flat sheets and then forming them into cups on custom-engineered machinery.

WHAT IS RECYCLED COTTON?

27 Jan

Natural / Gray

So what is recycled cotton, and why are there so many new promotional products coming to market, using recycled cotton.

For this post I am going to be borrowing a lot from the Cottonworks website on recycled cotton.

Recycled cotton can be generally defined as converting cotton fabric into cotton fiber that can be reused in textile products. It is divided into two classes, Pre-consumer, and Post-consumer. I think we all understand Post-consumer. Something is made, and ends it’s useful life cycle, and is recycled. The thing that caught my eye lately are the pre-consumer recycled goods.

Pre-consumer is all the cutting, clippings, scraps, etc., that are the waste products of creating cotton goods in the first place. This is waste created at the factory level. So pre-consumer recycled cotton goods are made from cotton that would otherwise be going directly from production to garbage, without the consumer ever playing a part.

The largest volume of recycled cotton sources is produced through pre-consumer waste, such as cutting scraps. Post-consumer waste is more difficult to sort through due to various color shades, fabric blends, and it is generally a more labor-intensive process.

The Split Recycled Cotton Drawstring Bag is an example of what our industry is doing with this pre-consumer waste. The Split Recycled Cotton Drawstring Bag is made from a blend of production cotton and pre-consumer cotton. The means those cotton ‘scraps’ from production do not go to the landfill, but instead are blended into a useful product. In this case a really nice cinch style tote bag.

The Split Recycled Cotton Drawstring is made from cotton and pre-consumer cotton. This drawstring features a trendy color-block design with drawstring closure. Through a partnership with 1% For The Planet, one percent of sales of EcoSmart products will be donated to nonprofits dedicated to protecting the planet.

The Split Recycled Cotton Drawstring Bag is a good size at 16.5″ H X 14″ D, and available with a large full color imprint area from branding purposes. The bag also has a natural, slightly raw look and feels to it. However I suspect that has more to do with a purposeful design aesthetic, not to the materials used to create it. So yes, the bag screams look at me, I’m something different, maybe wholesome, maybe more ‘natural’.

Thinking about consumer perception, it is interesting that most consumers do not equate recycled with sustainable, according to a report done by Lifestyle Monitor.

Cotton Incorporated’s Lifestyle Monitor™ research shows that consumers are seeking out recycled materials, but “recycled” does not necessarily equate to “sustainable” in a consumers’ mind.1 Research shows that 24% of consumers are willing to pay more for clothing or home textiles that are labeled as “recycled”, and 32% of consumers who plan on purchasing clothing or home textiles will look for “recycled” clothing; however, only 5% of consumers believe that “sustainable” = “recycled”. Consumers place more value in clothing or products labeled as “100% cotton”, “natural”, or “environmentally-friendly”.

In this case it may be important for the marketing professional to clearly understand the story they wish to tell with their recycled cotton promotional products.

Cold Weather Must-Haves, Eco-Insulated Jackets

27 Jan

Storm Creek is bringing in a line of recycled content jackets to help battle the winter cold. In the case of Storm Creek, the recycled material is being used in the interior of the jackets, as insulation, instead of the other shell of jacket, as we have seen with PCNA and other brands.

Two styles to take a look at with Storm Creek are their Eco-insulated Travelpack jackets, and their Luxe Eco-Insulated jackets. From the manufacturer;

Eco-insulated Travelpack jackets; No room in your luggage for an insulated jacket? No worries. This packable, super lightweight travel coat offers 60 gsm of Thermolite® EcoMade insulation to ensure that the warmth comes along, wherever you go.

Luxe Eco-Insulated jackets; Warm. Waterproof. Breathable. Adjustable. The Luxe truly has it all. This versatile piece of outerwear is ready to go wherever the cold takes you. The StormX™ Herringbone Polyester Fabric and EcoMade Insulation (165 gsm) keep out the cold and wet.

Both jackets are very nice. And for both there is no way for the consumer to actually tell these jackets have any recycled content unless you tell them. Aside from a hangtag with the jackets, they have little to identify them as recycled. Of course adding the recycled content information into the decoration of the jackets is always an option.

From Bottle to Beautiful

More for 2020

This email just came through, it seems Storm Creek is expanding their eco collection in 2020.

Explore our Eco-Collection, which includes a variety of styles containing at least 35% recycled post-consumer waste, made primarily of recycled plastic bottles. Since launching this collection, we’ve saved more than a million plastic bottles from landfills or oceans. But this is just the beginning, as we’re weaving recycled materials into more styles every season. Plus, 1% from every purchase of our eco-collection goes to protect the environment.

Storm Creek is a pretty solid brand. And their eco-collection runs as high as 35% recycled content, so that puts them ahead of a number of other lines. Add to that a good choice of cuts and colors, and you have some great sustainable apparel options for your company’s marketing and uniform needs.

Also, keep in mind that Storm Creek decorates in house, with a typical turn around of 5-8 business days from art approval.

See the full look book at https://view.publitas.com/storm-creek/sc_lookbook_eco_codeda/page/1.

Like many other producers, Storm Creek is also participating in the 1% for the Planet initiative.

Earthwise collection from Vantage

11 Dec

Looks like Vantage Apparel is going to carrying more sustainable clothing options in 2020. This announcement just hit my inbox.

If your brand is looking for ways to create a more sustainable footprint, our Vantage Earthwise collection is the perfect place to start.

The Vantage Earthwise collection is a new wave of sustainable fashion that offers high-performing essentials made from REPREVE® HIGH-QUALITY recycled polyester. Each style within the Earthwise collection helps to keep plastic bottles from ending up in our oceans and landfills. Vantage has also pledged to donate a portion of sales to nonprofits committed to protecting our environment. Choose Earthwise and feel good that your promotional decision will affect real change in the protection and restoration of our planet.

See the full collection here https://vantageapparel.com/earthwise/

The clothing will be made with Repreve recycled fiber and also be participating in the 1% for the Planet Project. Those two facts make this inititiative into sustainable clothing better than most other options out there.

Plus this is Vantage Apparel we are talking about. They have been in business since 1977, and are always ranked as one of the best vendors in the promotional clothing market. “With more than 500,000 different embroidered logos under our belt, 1200 embroidery heads and the industry’s most experienced digitizers and operators, Vantage is the premier supplier to fulfill your order quickly and successfully. Re:cycled Collection by Solo New York

4 Dec

Logomark is going to start carrying the RE:CYCLED Collection from Solo New York. Here is what was sent to our office;

Solo New York launches its new line of sustainable bags, the Re:cycled Collection. Created into a heathered grey material from recycled PET plastic bottles, this collection offers practical bags with effortless looks.

Solo New York has partnered with the National Forest Foundation to help restore the national forests and will plant a tree with the sale of each Re:cycled bag.

From what I have seen on the website these bags have practical designs, and a good look to them. The line has the standard decoration options. I would have liked a few more colors, but I think the color options offered, black, gray, beige, have more to do with the design aesthetic at Solo New York.

Solo® Re:move Duffe
