The complete Appeel line from Castelli is unique in that these Made in Italy (but decorated in USA, so normal 5-7 turn around on orders) journals and padfolios are made from recycled apple waste. Yes, apples.

Take for example the Appeel Medio Notebook, “The Appeel Medio journal is made from apple peels that are ground and emulsified into an organic paper. First the silly questions. The Appeel Medio Notebook does not smell like apples. The Appeel Medio Notebook does not taste like apples. But, each Appeel Medio Notebook is printed with information explaining that the Appeel Medio Notebook is made from apple waste, and so that this story can be easily incorporated into your our sustainability marketing message.

Of course we love this idea for anyone working on campaigns for sales, production, or distribution channels in the grocery or fruit industry. If your company is doing something with apples specifically, all the better.

And teachers gifts, as a nice Appeel Medio Notebook is likely more practical then an actual apple.

There is a new long sleeve tee from Econscious on the market. And it is really, really nice.

The EC1588 econscious Men’s Sueded Jersey Long Sleeve is available in 3 color options and sizes, S- XXL. The material for the EC1588 econscious Men’s Sueded Jersey Long Sleeve is a 4.25oz 60% organic cotton ring-spun jersey material, with a 40% blend of recycled polyester.

These are the same quality shirts that Econsciuos is selling in their retail line, and part of the 1% For The Planet initiative at Econsciuos, see https://www.econscious.net/pages/sustainability. The shirts have a great drape, and a retail look to them.

However, as covered in the FAQ page at the Econsciuos website, these shirts are not manufactured in the USA, and in their defense, it is really hard to locate affordable, recycled content tees, that are made in the USA.

Other than their materials, the EC1588 econscious Men’s Sueded Jersey Long Sleeve is your basic long-sleeve tee (ok, they are a lot nicer than an average tee shirt), and by that I mean we can imprint the tees locally, with any art or logo necessary for your brand or business.

I think the extra cost of a sustainable tee is only really worthwhile, if the fact that the tee is made from sustainability sourced materials directly ties to the brand message your business or organization is seeking to promote. If you are teaching or preaching sustainability via your brand, it is good to look the part.

Do you play cards?

Have you ever really looked at a deck? For the marketing world, I like to think about a deck of cards as 52 little billboards taking your message into the world.

And who has ever tossed away a set of cards? I was in a rental cabin in Northern Virginia once, that deck was missing an Ace, two 4s, and the Queen of Diamonds, and it was still there, being used as best we could.

Why Cork?

Spring is starting here in Texas. As is planning for a number of Texas wine events. So I thought this was a good time to post this information on cork and the cork coasters from Americanna.

1) Sustainably Harvested Cork

Careful forest management not only provides for the continued extraction of the cork oak but helps to create the conditions for a diverse range of other products that are harvested from the woodlands. A harmonious balance is maintained, where local people can provide for their needs without damaging the ecosystem or threatening the long-term sustainability of their most important natural resource. The cork oak is a slow growing tree that may live for 200 years, which allows it, on average, to be stripped 16 times during its lifetime. The first stripping only takes place after 25 years, when the trunk of the tree has a circumference of 70 cm.

2) Biodiversity Hotspot

Cork oak trees help to conserve soil by providing protection against wind erosion and increasing the rate at which rainwater infiltrates and recharges groundwater. Cork oak landscapes cover approximately 2.7 million hectares of Portugal, Spain, Algeria, Morocco, Italy, Tunisia and France. As well as providing a vital source of income for more than 100,000 people, these landscapes also support one of the highest levels of biodiversity among forest habitats, including globally endangered species such as the Iberian Lynx, the Iberian Imperial Eagle and the Barbary Deer. The Mediterranean is one of the 25 global ‘hot spots’ characterized by a high level of species diversity. It has 13,000 endemic plant species, the second highest number in the world after the tropical Andes. In cork oak landscapes, plant diversity can reach a level of 135 species per square metre, and may of these species have aromatic, culinary or medicinal uses.

3) Naturally Sequesters Carbon

In comparison to the aluminium and plastic closures, the cork stopper is the best alternative in terms of non-renewable energy consumption, emission of greenhouse effect gases, contribution to atmospheric acidification, contribution to the formation of photochemical oxidants, contribution to the eutrophication of surface water and total production of solid waste. The capture of carbon by the cork oaks during the photosynthesis process results in plant growth and transforms atmospheric CO2 into O2 and, in the case of organic matter, into cellulose. For this reason the forest is considered to be an important carbon sink.

4) Biodegradable and Recyclable

Cork is a truly sustainable product – it is renewable and biodegradable. Cork harvesting is an environmentally friendly process during which not a single tree is cut down. The bark renews itself ready for the next harvesting. Unlike its synthetic counterparts, cork is an inherently sustainable resource, both renewable and biodegradable. The cork oak tree (Quercus suber) is unique in that its thick bark can be stripped off every decade to extract the cork without damaging the trees, which can live 170 to 250 years on average.

5) Preserves Local Livelihoods

Without the demand for cork, economic pressures could force farmers to abandon the active management of cork forests, which may lead to rural exodus as well as unbalance the ecosystems that preserve the biodiversity of these regions. The increase in the market share of alternative wine stoppers, specifically plastic stoppers and screw-tops, could reduce the economic value of cork lands, therefore leading to conversion to other uses, abandonment, degradation, and finally loss of one of the best and most valuable examples of a human-nature balanced system. Because the forests have an economic value to local communities, people care for the forests. Cork oak woodlands provide employment and guarantee the survival of local communities. More than 100,000 people in the seven Mediterranean cork-producing countries depend directly and indirectly on cork economies. Cork is a vital source of regional rural employment. Over 15 billion cork stoppers are produced every year and sold worldwide to the wine industry. These stoppers are processed from bark harvested from cork oak woodlands that have existed in the Western Mediterranean for thousands of years. Cork for bottle stoppers accounts for almost 70% of the total value of the cork market. The wine industry thus plays a vital role in maintaining the economic value of cork and the cork oak forests.

Trees are truly the lungs of the planet and what could be more sustainable than giving the gift of a living tree and making that part of your holiday traditions? 100% Recycled Credit Card Size Ice Scrapers

Here is another smart and practical promotional idea from Garyline that I think is great for this time of year, the 100% recycled material 3250 Credit Card Ice Scraper.

I have written before about the sustainable materials line from Garyline, and how it always seems to be practical as well as creative. Currently working with a pool maintenance client we got to talking about inexpensive ideas to keep their brand in front of their client during the winter months.

The 125th State Fair of Texas – the largest state fair in the United States – is running now until October 23rd. Come on down to the fair.

Proforma Green Marketing is proud to be a small part of the 125th State Fair of Texas. We are part of the Sustainability Showcase located in the Texas Discovery Gardens. Our mission at the fair is to educate the public about the many sustainable marketing solutions that are available. Recyglove™

The Illinois Glove Company was established in 1919. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

As part of their new line the RECYGLOVE was develop to be a product that could reduce pollution and waste, while utilizing materials that would otherwise be discarded into landfills.

“RECYGLOVE gloves are produced from the excess fabric of newly made clothing and contain minimal or no dyes. Basically Illinois Glove Company is taking scrap material and making it into new gloves.” Recycle and reuse demonstrated in the purest form.

Illinois Glove Company says this manufacturing process saves land, energy and water, which makes sense even if you only consider the energy and waste saved by using discarded materials in favor of new – needing to be made – materials.  By recycling post-industrial fibers,  Illinois Glove Company has “created comfortable, well made, eco-friendly gloves that can be used for a variety of everyday activities at a reasonable price”.

And they work. And they look good. And as a promo item there are a few great ideas here.

Doing a community pickup project? Give gloves from reclaimed content to volunteers– gloves that fit the project at hand, so to speak.

Sell organic or reclaimed material  for the garden? This idea will fit your product and marketing plan like a glove.

Working on a sustainable building project? Use a sustainable glove.

Gloves can be branded in up to three colors via heat transfer. Runs do start high, around 480 pair units. But really, what a great, great idea this is. Planting and building is so often tied so strongly to sustainability. It is great to see that a sustainable glove has arrived.

There is no getting around the fact that the last few months have seen some really terrible weather in the U.S.  Floods, fires, tornadoes, all have been issues in the first half of 2011.
