When people think about sustainable products often it is recycled materials in the forefront of their ideas. I would like to once again make the case for cotton. Cotton is plant fiber. When, for example, cotton bags are done with their useful life, over time they will simply break down and go away.

I do understand that cotton is a more water intensive crop than some other plant fibers. I do understand that GM cotton and cotton grown with petrochemical fertilizers is a concern to some in our community. However if you’re looking for sustainable products, yes you can do recycled, yes you can do organic cotton, but something as simple as finding a natural finish cotton bag, like the Gemline All Purpose Tote, might fit your project just fine.

The dying in the production of cotton cloth is one of the more significantly harmful parts of the process. But it is getting better, as more companies adopt higher standards. Also more companies like Gemline are offering their cotton items with a natural, dye free finish.

Take a look at this all purpose 9oz cotton canvas tote with 100% cotton natural finish from Gemline.  A practical item, a very strong bag, a natural look, and a natural feel. It is time to reconsider cotton.

And as always, if you really want to do something sustainable, do not buy promotional products. All products are consumption at one level or another. So if you must buy 1) Buy local (i.e. made in USA), 2) Buy useful, long lasting items, 3) Buy sustainable if possible.
